Titan Mining Corporation has officially begun processing graphite ore from its Fowler Mine in upstate New York — marking the first U.S. graphite production in over 70 years. The project represents a major step toward rebuilding America’s domestic supply of this critical mineral, essential for battery anodes, refractories, high-temperature lubricants, and advanced industrial materials.

Reviving Domestic Supply

Mining operations began in September, and Titan Mining has already applied for a $1 million grant from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to expand production. The company plans to build a micronization and purification plant, shifting from raw ore extraction to refined graphite output suitable for industrial and energy applications.

According to Titan Mining’s president Rita Adiani, the mine is expected to produce around 40,000 tons of graphite per year. For context, U.S. demand is estimated at 70,000–80,000 tons annually, while China controls roughly 75% of global graphite production.

Local Jobs and Industrial Integration

The Fowler project will preserve 135 existing jobs and create an additional 55 positions in St. Lawrence County. Titan Mining also plans to integrate with U.S. manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries and refractory materials, supporting a local, self-reliant supply chain for the green industry and metallurgical sectors.

Strategic Context

The restart of graphite mining in the United States aligns with the national push to secure critical minerals and raw materials, from rare earths to magnesia and bauxite. Demand for graphite continues to grow not only in energy storage but also in the refractory industry, where high-purity carbon remains indispensable for magnesia-carbon bricks, foundry coatings, and advanced castables.

In the coming years, Titan Mining’s Fowler operation could become a cornerstone of America’s new industrial strategy — strengthening supply resilience for both refractory producers and the battery materials sector.
