The Brazilian government has reinstated the National Council for Mining Policy (CNPM) — a strategic move aimed at reinforcing the country’s position as a global supplier of critical and strategic minerals essential for the green transition and advanced manufacturing.

The council, chaired by Minister of Energy Alexandre Silveira under the leadership of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has established a special working group on critical minerals, including graphite, lithium, nickel, and niobium — key materials for refractory production, electric batteries, and high-temperature technologies.

According to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, the new framework will focus on developing an integrated industrial policy that promotes exploration, local processing, and technological innovation across Brazil’s mineral value chain.

This initiative signals Brazil’s intent to reclaim leadership in the strategic minerals market, linking its mining sector more closely to global clean-energy and high-tech supply chains.
