South African mining group Sibanye-Stillwater has officially completed all preparatory steps to launch a new chrome production agreement with the Glencore-Merafe joint venture, reinforcing its diversification strategy within the country’s mining sector.
Starting November 1, 2025, Glencore will take over management of several chrome recovery plants located near Sibanye’s platinum operations. The collaboration aims to improve production efficiency, enhance chrome recovery, and optimize costs through unified management and processing expertise.
The partnership reflects a strategic shift toward maximizing by-product value from platinum operations while boosting South Africa’s position as a global leader in ferrochrome and refractory-grade raw materials.
