Massena, NY — Alcoa Corporation has announced a $60 million investment to modernize its aluminum smelter in Massena, New York — the world’s oldest continuously operating aluminum facility, in service since 1902.

The investment will focus on rebuilding the anode furnace and upgrading anode production to improve efficiency and sustainability. The project, scheduled for completion by 2028, underscores Alcoa’s long-term commitment to maintaining competitive and low-carbon U.S. operations.

At the same time, Alcoa has signed a 10-year renewable energy contract with the New York Power Authority (NYPA), ensuring stable access to hydropower and supporting around 500 local jobs.

Governor Kathy Hochul praised the initiative as a model of industrial modernization aligned with the clean energy transition:

“This investment preserves hundreds of jobs and proves that sustainable aluminum production has a future in New York.”

For Alcoa, the move strengthens its U.S. smelting base, secures access to renewable energy, and supports the company’s mission to produce aluminum with a lower carbon footprint.
